What Is A Tree?

A tree is a plant with a large stem, also known as a trunk, that have evolved to grow large and tall to tower over other plants and gain as much sunlight as possible. The trunk of most trees is made of wood, and different types of wood grow from different types of trees. For example, oak trees are made of oak wood, whereas pine trees are made of pine wood.

Trees absorb sunlight through leaves, which grow on branches that split out from the trunk. Most trees can live for a very long time, and some are known to have existed for thousands of years. Trees as a species have existed on Earth for 370 million years, and it is believed that there are three trillion trees on Earth today.

Trees are important because they remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and also produce oxygen, so they are essential for the continued survival of other living things on this planet. Most species of tree hold themselves upright using thick roots that extend underground, and these also help reduce erosion.

Trees are also important because they provide a habitat for many different types of animal, from birds and woodland mammals to insects and climbing plants. Some types of tree produce fruit which are edible to animals, including humans.
