How can I help LKS2 be respectful of diversity?

Teach this tolerance and respect lesson in year 3 or year 4 to explore what diversity is, why diversity is important and why we should be respectful of others. Discussing diversity is a key topic to give children a well-rounded education on global citizenship.

Use the lesson plan, presentation and additional resources to explore diversity in Britain and other British Isles during your PSHE and Citizenship classes. These brilliant, teacher-made resources will encourage children to discuss why showing respect and being tolerant is important. Children will also explore what discrimination and prejudice are, what we can do if we witness or experience them, and their relationship with human rights.

In our tolerance and respect lesson pack, you'll find:

  • Celebrating Diversity Activity Sheet
  • Diversity Data Sheet
  • Showing Respect Poster
  • Tolerance and Respect Lesson Plan
  • Tolerance and Respect Lesson Presentation

All of these resources can help you to explore these important topics with your children in your tolerance and respect lesson. Provide LKS2 classes with opportunities to explore and celebrate British diversity, develop an understanding of the differences between people and how discrimination can negatively impact people's lives. These concepts are explored in this PSHE and Citizenship lesson pack in an age-appropriate way.

These LKS2 resources have been produced to be fully in line with the Learning Outcomes and Core Themes outlined in the PSHE Association Programme of Study, which is widely used by schools in England and is recommended and referred to by the DfE in all key documentation relating to PSHE provision in schools.

What is discrimination?

People are sometimes treated unfairly and without respect by others because of differences between them. This is called discrimination and is often based on prejudiced thoughts and feelings: ones which are not based on truth or reason.
