Animals that eat plants and other animals?

An omnivore is an animal that eats both plants and animals. Many different animals fall into this category, for example:

  • Chickens can eat seeds and worms.
  • Bears can eat berries and fish.
  • Pigs can eat roots and insects.

Other types of animals are either herbivores (eating only plants) or carnivores (eating only meat).

Great for sorting and helpful having info on what animals eat BUT why say dogs eat plants - that's not their biological makeup; 2 other sources state hedgehogs are carnivores, not omnivores. That made me worry there may be other inaccuracies.

✔ Thank you for your feedback
    • Hello Daniep,
Thanks for spotting this. I'll let the design team know right away and get this looked at.

    • Our lovely team have checked this for you, and have found the resource to be correct. Although a hedgehog's diet is mostly meat-based, they will eat fruit or plants if these are available. In addition, although dogs too mostly eat meat, some plant-based foods such as grains are necessary for them to have a well functioning digestive system.
      I hope this helps :)

    Hi
I adapted this resource for my Year 2 class. I used the cards but wrote a little bit about each animal so it wasn't so obvious which classification they were. Eg, I am like to make a nest for my eggs. When my chicks hatch I give them some worms while I nibble on some seeds or bread.

This is so that the children have to lift the information instead of it being obvious for them (they are fab readers)

Thank you for such a great resource!
