How can I use this PowerPoint to introduce children to habitats?

This interactive PowerPoint makes for a great foundation for learning about habitats.

This presentation contains 13 slides of high-quality photographs of different habitats, ready for you to show to your learners -saving you time browsing online and formatting presentations.

Photos are a fantastic way to encourage discussion and prompt ideas - where could you find these habitats? What might live there? Examples include habitats children may know locally - from fields to mountains; swamps to hedges and rivers.

  • Simply click download to access your PowerPoint. A clear, concise definition of habitats is also included.
Use as an engaging lesson starter to provide some inspiration at the start of a creative writing task in Literacy, or base a Science lesson around the different habitats included in the presentation.

Take a look at this Habitats Twinkl Teaching Wiki to take a deep dive into this topic, or browse this collection for more activities and worksheets on this topic.

Why is it important to learn about habitats?

As students explore and investigate different habitats - from rockpools to tundra and grasslands - they begin to understand the importance of both living and nonliving things in a habitat. Children will deepen their understanding about different places in the world, as well as how animals and plants have certain characteristics that means they thrive where they live.

This kind of learning provides the foundations for learning about evolution, inheritance and variation in Science as they progress through school. What's more, learning about habitats is lifelong knowledge that children can use wherever they go. They'll know where to find certain plants and animals, and how to care for them. It'll help them to navigate the world around them and understand the changes in the environment.

For more inspiration and support, take a look at popular habitats resources: you'll find display posters to fun Woodland Animals Habitats Activities. Find the material that suits your unique teaching style and learning objectives for your learners.

  3. Deserts

  5. Rockpools
  6. Coral Reefs

This is a great powerpoint to use as an introduction to Habitats. Perfect for my 1st class (age 7) before we go on a spring nature walk where they can observe habitats in the local area.
