You could recreate some coastal landforms using playdough. Why not make a model showing how a cave develops into an arch, then stack and stump?

Why not visit a coastline with an adult? You could try to spot some features of coastal erosion or deposition.

Hit the beach and have a sandcastle competition! If you can’t get to the beach you could use the sand in your sandpit or mud from your garden.

Rock towers are great fun to make on a beach. You will need to balance your rocks carefully to build your own rock tower. They are also a great way to practise ordering objects by size.

If you can’t visit a beach, why not have your own beach-themed fun day at home? Grab your beach towels, sunglasses and beach ball. Take a look at these handy Summer at the Seaside-Themed Learning Activities for some inspiration.

You can recreate the coastal processes that shape bays and headland with this simple activity. All you need is some bourbon biscuits or custard creams. When you suck your biscuit, the cream will ‘erode’ more quickly than the biscuit. Do you think the biscuit represents the hard rock of the headland, or the soft rock of the bay?

Discover how longshore drift transports material along the coast with this simple activity. You will need an object that floats (oranges are great as they are natural and won’t damage the environment if it gets lost). Throw the object as far as you can out into the sea. Watch what happens to it. You should find that is travels along the coastline because of the effect of longshore drift.

If you are able to visit a beach, why not make your own shell or rock collection?
