  • Edible plate tectonics! Earthquakes happen most commonly at plate boundaries. With three sandwich biscuits, gently remove the top biscuit, snap it in half and place back on top of the filling. Can you create the types of plate boundaries (constructive, destructive, and conservative) by moving the top biscuits in a similar way to the tectonic plates? What do you notice about how easy it is to move the biscuit ‘plates’ over the filling (mantle)?

  • Compare P and S waves using a long spring. Stretch the spring over the width of a table, with one person holding each end of the spring. One person pushes the spring towards the other (be sure to keep hold of the spring!) to create compressional P-waves. Then, the other person moves their end of the spring from side to side to create longitudinal S-waves. Which waves travel through the spring quickest?
