If some animals or plants lower down a food chain become infected with a disease or poisoned by a toxin (such as pollution), this can cause big problems higher up the web.

For example, if the strawberries become poisoned, the fox at the top of the web will eat lots of strawberries and lots of animals that have eaten strawberries. The small intake of the mouse and hedgehog might not be enough to kill them, but foxes have a much bigger appetite, so they will get a larger amount of toxin. This means that diseases and pollution in our environment need to be carefully monitored and dealt with.
